One of the most common questions I hear is "What is coaching?" Before I could answer, however, I had to make sure that I understood what it was myself! And it took a while, even though I was immersed in coaching literature, language, processes, and research. But what finally became clear to me is that coaching is about moving forward. When you choose to work with a coach, it is because you are ready for something in your life to change – even if you do not know what it is, how it could change, or what it might look like.
And although you might work with a coach and discuss things that have happened in the past, the intention is to utilize that knowledge to develop your ability to see that you can make different choices. Coaching is about progress – progress that you define, control, measure, and hold yourself accountable for. It is always about YOU – your agenda, your ideas, and your resources.
What you get out of coaching is, at a minimum, equal to what you put in. Because the process is driven by your agenda, no one is going to tell you that you have to do something, go somewhere, buy something, or do more than sit on the couch and watch TV! In this regard, coaching can be considered personal empowerment on a fundamental and practical level – you have all the power and it is up to you to make things happen.
